Australia’s second largest city, Melbourne is an extremely popular destination for expatriates from all over the world. The state capital of Victoria in south eastern Australia, Melbourne enjoys a mild, temperate climate with four distinct seasons. The city of Melbourne is located just a few kilometres inland from Port Phillip Bay, with the main part of the city on the northern bank of the Yarra River, with its historic Victorian bridges.

Melbourne is a highly multicultural and cosmopolitan city, in which nationals of more than 140 countries are represented among residents. More than a quarter of Melbourne’s population of 3.5 million was born overseas, and more than 40% were either born overseas or have a foreign-born parent. Melbourne is also a very young city, with nearly half of its residents aged below 35. There are around 50,000 international students living in Melbourne. Although expats live throughout the city and surrounding suburbs, successive waves of migration have resulted in cultural enclaves, such as the Italian, Greek and Vietnamese quarters. Most western expatriates now live in the suburbs surrounding the city center.
